Nestling in the lofty peaks of Himalayas are the four most holy pilgrimages of India - Sri Badrinathji, Sri Kedarnathji, , Yamunotri and Gangotri, collectively referred to as the Char Dham ( or four pilgrimage centres) of Hinduism. For centuries, saints and pilgrims, in their search for the divine, have walked these mystical vales known in ancient Hindu scriptures as 'Kedarkhand'.

In the scriptures of Hindu religion the Chardhams are believed to be the most sacred of all pilgrimages. Undertaking a journey (yatra) to these places will not just wash away one's sins but ensures release from the cycle of birth and death. The Chardham must be visited from left to right -beginning with Yamunotri, going on to Gangotri, Shri Kedarnathji and culminating the journey at Shri Badrinathji. This route follows the Hindu tradition of parikrama or clockwise circumambulation.

According to mythology, Goddess Ganga - the daughter of heaven, manifested herself in the form of a river to absolve the sins of King Bhagirath's predecessors, following his severe penance of several centuries. Lord Shiva received the sacred river into his matted locks to minimize the immense impact of her fall. She came to be called Bhagirathi at her legendary source.

Perched at a height of 3042 mts along the right back of Bhagirathi stands the shrine of Gangotri dedicated to the Goddess “Ganga”. Every year, lakhs of pilgrims throng the sacred temple between May and October. By November, Gangotri is covered by snow. The temple remains closed from Nov. to April due to severe winter conditions. It is believed that the Goddess retreats to Mukhba, her winter abode (12 kms downstream).

The physical source of the holy river is at Gaumukh, 18 kms. further uphill, along the Gangotri Glacier. Several pilgrims trek upto the source to offer prayers either on foot or on ponies.

By Road – Gangotri is connected by road to Uttarakashi, Tehri Garhwal and Rishikesh and from there to other parts of the country. Bus services of Samyukt Rotation Yatayat Vyawastha Samiti connect Gangotri with many centres in the region like Haridwar, Rishikesh, Tehri, Uttarkashi etc.
